Croque Monsieur (Classic French Ham and Cheese Sandwich Recipe)

Ingredients (Serves 2–4)
8 slices of white or pain de mie bread
150 g sliced ham
150 g grated Gruyère or Emmental cheese
25 g butter
25 g all-purpose flour
300 ml milk
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Pinch of nutmeg (optional)
Preparation
Prepare béchamel sauce:
Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
Stir in flour to form a roux and cook 1–2 minutes.
Gradually whisk in milk, stirring constantly until smooth and thickened.
Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
Assemble sandwiches:
Preheat oven to 200°C (390°F).
Spread a thin layer of béchamel sauce on each slice of bread.
Layer ham and grated cheese on half of the slices.
Top with remaining bread slices and spread béchamel on top.
Sprinkle extra cheese over the top.
Bake:
Place sandwiches on a baking sheet and bake for 10–15 minutes until golden and bubbly.
Optional: Finish under a broiler for 2–3 minutes for a crispier top.
Serve:
Cut in halves and serve immediately while hot.

Serve with a green salad or French fries.
Pair with white wine or a light beer for a café-style experience.
Cooking Tips
Use thick, fresh bread for the best texture.
For an extra indulgent version, add a fried egg on top (Croque Madame).
