Croque Monsieur (Classic French Ham and Cheese Sandwich Recipe)

Ingredients (Serves 2–4)

  • 8 slices of white or pain de mie bread

  • 150 g sliced ham

  • 150 g grated Gruyère or Emmental cheese

  • 25 g butter

  • 25 g all-purpose flour

  • 300 ml milk

  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

  • Pinch of nutmeg (optional)


Preparation


  1. Prepare béchamel sauce:

    • Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat.

    • Stir in flour to form a roux and cook 1–2 minutes.

    • Gradually whisk in milk, stirring constantly until smooth and thickened.

    • Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.

  2. Assemble sandwiches:

    • Preheat oven to 200°C (390°F).

    • Spread a thin layer of béchamel sauce on each slice of bread.

    • Layer ham and grated cheese on half of the slices.

    • Top with remaining bread slices and spread béchamel on top.

    • Sprinkle extra cheese over the top.

  3. Bake:

    • Place sandwiches on a baking sheet and bake for 10–15 minutes until golden and bubbly.

    • Optional: Finish under a broiler for 2–3 minutes for a crispier top.

  4. Serve:

    • Cut in halves and serve immediately while hot.

  • Pair with white wine or a light beer for a café-style experience.

  • Use thick, fresh bread for the best texture.

  • For an extra indulgent version, add a fried egg on top (Croque Madame).

  • Make béchamel ahead of time to save prep time.
