Ingredients (Serves 2–4)
200–250 g semi-hard cheese (Edam, Gouda, or similar), cut into 1–1.5 cm thick slices
2 eggs, beaten
4–5 tbsp all-purpose flour
6–8 tbsp breadcrumbs
Salt and pepper, to taste
Vegetable oil, for frying
To Serve:
Tartar sauce or mayonnaise
French fries or boiled potatoes
Optional: lemon wedges and pickles
Preparation
Prepare the cheese:
Slice cheese into even pieces about 1–1.5 cm thick.
Season lightly with salt and pepper.
Coat the cheese:
Dredge each slice in flour, then dip in beaten egg, and finally coat with breadcrumbs.
For extra crispiness, double-dip in egg and breadcrumbs.
Fry the cheese:
Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat.
Fry cheese slices for 2–3 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
Remove and drain on paper towels.
Serve:
Serve hot immediately with tartar sauce, fries, or bread.
Cooking Tips
Keep oil at medium heat to avoid burning breadcrumbs while ensuring cheese melts inside.
Double-coating with egg and breadcrumbs creates a thicker, crunchier crust that holds the cheese better.
Serving Suggestions
Serve with tartar sauce and French fries for a classic Czech street-food experience.
Pair with fresh bread or pickles for a lighter snack or lunch.
