Ingredients (Serves 4–6)
6–8 slices of day-old bread (white or brioche), cut into cubes or slices
3–4 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
3–4 tbsp sugar (adjust to taste)
2 tsp ground cinnamon
3 eggs
400 ml milk
50 g butter, melted
Optional: raisins or nuts
Preparation
Prepare the bread and apples:
Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
Butter a baking dish lightly.
Layer half the bread, then half the apple slices, sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon.
Repeat with remaining bread and apples. Add raisins or nuts if desired.
Make the custard:
In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, and melted butter.
Pour evenly over the layered bread and apples.
Bake:
Bake for 35–45 minutes until the custard is set and the top is golden brown.
Allow to cool slightly before serving.
Cooking Tips
Use slightly stale bread to help absorb the custard without becoming too mushy.
Bake until just set in the center for a soft, creamy texture.
Serving Suggestions
Serve warm with a dollop of sour cream, cream, or vanilla sauce.
Dust with powdered sugar and pair with fresh berries or fruit preserves for extra sweetness.
