Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

  • 6–8 slices of day-old bread (white or brioche), cut into cubes or slices

  • 3–4 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced

  • 3–4 tbsp sugar (adjust to taste)

  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 3 eggs

  • 400 ml milk

  • 50 g butter, melted

  • Optional: raisins or nuts

Preparation

  1. Prepare the bread and apples:

    • Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).

    • Butter a baking dish lightly.

    • Layer half the bread, then half the apple slices, sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon.

    • Repeat with remaining bread and apples. Add raisins or nuts if desired.

  2. Make the custard:

    • In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, and melted butter.

    • Pour evenly over the layered bread and apples.

  3. Bake:

    • Bake for 35–45 minutes until the custard is set and the top is golden brown.

    • Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Cooking Tips

  • Use slightly stale bread to help absorb the custard without becoming too mushy.

  • Bake until just set in the center for a soft, creamy texture.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve warm with a dollop of sour cream, cream, or vanilla sauce.

  • Dust with powdered sugar and pair with fresh berries or fruit preserves for extra sweetness.
